Guam Business Magazine donated $5,000 each to the University of Guam, Northern Marianas College and the GCA Trades Academy. The donations were from funds raised at the Guam Business Magazine Executive of the Year Gala held at the Hyatt Regency Guam on Jan. 23. The UOG funds will be used for stipends for student leadership roles at The Triton’s Call newspaper and Adobe Cloud applications to allow students to design, edit and publish professional-grade journalism across digital and print platforms. NMC funds will be used for technical equipment for the simulation lab to support business communication and marketing students working on digital media projects. The GCA Trades Academy will use the funding to purchase welding equipment to expand the welding program. Other sponsors of the event were Bank of Guam, Black Construction Corp., Docomo Pacific, First Hawaiian Bank, IP&E, McDonald’s of Guam and Saipan, Mobil Oil Guam, Ambros Inc. and Hyatt Regency Guam.

Community First Federal Credit Union and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines donated $17,500 each to Catholic Social Service, Guma’ Mami Inc., and Harvest House. Community First is giving $5,000 to each organization and FHLB Des Moines provided a matching grant of $12,500. The matching grant program will result in FHLB Des Moines awarding more than $12.9 million in funding for affordable housing and community development in Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands and Alaska and South Dakota. CSS will use the funds towards a new day care setting for the elderly and disability populations. The program will assist those who cannot function independently and provide basic needs and support. Guma’ Mami will use the funds to launch technological upgrades at two residential sites, and link residents with their families, facilitate telehealth, and provide training and support. Harvest House will use the funds to help construct a donation collection center for community donations that will go to foster families and foster children, children’s shelters, and other community members.

Marines assigned to Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz participated in their Sister School, Finegayan Elementary's, Guam Heritage Day during Mes CHamoru — a field day and celebration with students, faculty, and community partners. Marines, sailors, and civilian staff of Camp Blaz donated nearly 60 sports items, including volleyball nets and balls, footballs, soccer balls, jump ropes, chalk, and more as part of an initiative to donate new equipment to the school.

The Bank of Hawaii Foundation awarded a $5,000 grant to Joeten Daidai Foundation in support of the organization’s student scholarship program across the NMI.

The Commonwealth Healthcare Corp. has been awarded more than $8.6 million in grant funding from The Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust to expand and modernize the sole hospital-based surgical department in the Northern Mariana Islands from about 2,300 square feet to 4,500 square feet.
The Helmsley grant will allow CHCC to improve operational efficiency, strengthen its ability to deliver safe, high-quality surgical care, reduce waiting times, and build a sustainable surgical capacity to serve the NMI. Additionally, the project will provide advanced technologies and new equipment for the operating room and medication dispensing systems. The expansion will promote compliance with current Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services.
Bank of Guam donated $5,000 to Northern Marianas College in support of its upcoming Golf Open on March 21 and 22. Other sponsors include Latte Built 24hr Fitness, Marianas Pacific Distributors Inc., and Pacifica Insurance Underwriters.
Atkins Kroll Inc. donated $35 per test drive to the Malesso’ Municipal Council up to $1,914 at the Malesso' Crab Festival.
Humanities Guahan will also launch its Humanities100 campaign, a fundraising effort to raise $35,000, which will be matched 1:1 by the Federation of State Humanities Councils, with support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. mbj
