Guam lost two well-known figures in the business community.
James Martinez, former president and co-founder of GCA Trades Academy, passed away Feb. 9. He served as GCA’s president for 23 years.
"James' legacy will forever be etched in the foundation of Guam's construction industry," said Matt Hunter, chairman of the board of the Guam Contractors Association. Martinez championed numerous initiatives aimed at empowering the current and the next generation of construction professionals.
Martinez served as GCA Trade Academy’s first Master Trainer, created innovative programs such as "Pizza, Pop and Power Tools" and "Construction Warriors" to inspire young girls and youth in general to join the construction industry. He founded the Joseph Leasiolagi "Samoan Joe" Annual Safety Conference, developed the GCA Construction & Truck Rodeo; launched the GCA Industry Trade Fair & Expo; created the Meet the Generals Networking initiative; tripled the number of active construction industry apprentices in Guam and thus expanding the GCA Apprenticeship Programs; established the Excellence in Construction and Contractor of the Year Awards as well as the GCA Employee Group Health Insurance Program. Funeral and memorial services are being planned.
Sinforoso "Rossi" Tolentino recently passed away.
He was the principal owner of Tolentino Legal Counsel LLC, which concentrated on estate planning and business law, though Tolentino was skilled in a variety of areas.
Prior to that, Tolentino was Of Counsel to the Camacho Calvo Law Group LLC for almost eight years, and a partner at Carlsmith Ball LLP for more than 35 years. Tolentino served as a director of the Guam Chamber of Commerce, and as a trustee of St. John’s School. Aside from practicing law, he was also co-owner of Pop’s Bakeshop in Agat, which he and his wife Anna opened in 2013.
Sinforoso M. Tolentino held a 1989 bachelors of science in finance and business administration from Georgetown University and a 1989 juris doctorate from Georgetown University Law Center. He was a member of the Guam Bar Association and previously was also a member of the Hawaii State Bar Association.
