New Guam National Guard team takes over missile defense mission

The Guam National Guard continues its mission of defending Guam as Task Force Talon marks a change in responsibility, transitioning from Team Binadu to Team Kulepbla during a Transfer of Authority Ceremony on Friday, October 4.

Held at a Marine Corps Base Camp Blaz hangar on Andersen Air Force Base, the event highlighted the Guam Guard’s ongoing role in supporting the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, a missile defense system designed to detect, track, and shoot down short, medium, and intermediate range ballistic missiles. 

This transfer marks the eighth iteration of the Guam Guard’s security forces contribution under Task Force Talon.

U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jonathan Stafford, commanding officer of Task Force Talon, praised Team Binadu for their success during their 10-month rotation. “Team Binadu always maintained their professionalism and steadfast security operations, regardless of the situations presented,” Stafford said. “Their dedication and loyalty to the mission allowed them to succeed in every mission.”

Team Binadu not only completed its assigned security tasks, such as the Guam Thunder Joint Training Exercise and securing VIP visits from Pentagon officials and military commanders, but also took part in community service projects. The soldiers volunteered over 9,000 hours, aiding in public school cleanups and other local efforts, including recovery work in the aftermath of Typhoon Mawar.

“They cleaned a total of 12 schools, with six of them passing health inspections and reopening,” Stafford said, highlighting Team Binadu’s significant impact on the community. The soldiers were awarded Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medals for their efforts.

During the ceremony, Team Kulepbla assumed their new responsibilities. Stafford urged the incoming team to stay vigilant. “The THAAD battery cannot defend the skies over Guam without you defending the ground around it. The security of this island is dependent on how well each and every one of you execute your duties every day," Stafford said.

Joshua F. Tenorio, lieutenant governor of Guam, also addressed the crowd, emphasizing the historical significance of the Guam Guard’s mission. He said, “We have this unique opportunity where the sons and daughters of Guam are able to actively participate in the defense of Guam.” 

Tenorio said, “Global events have given us a reminder about the perils that occur in the geopolitics of the world... and yet again it's a stark reminder of the role and purpose that our island and our people have.” mbj
