South Pacific Petroleum Corp. donated $500 to the University of Guam’s Triton Advertising & Management Association to support its student-led marketing and leadership initiatives. TAMA is UOS’s newest student organization dedicated to marketing. The organization unites students from different majors to explore advertising, management, event production, social media strategy, brand storytelling, and project leadership.

Several companies and organizations donated water to the village of Yigo, following the news that water in some village locations was undrinkable due to contamination by dieldrin, a pesticide. Ambros Inc. donated 11,760 cans of Anheuser-Busch Emergency water. Members of the John F. Kennedy High School Class of 1976 contributed approximately 2,400 bottles of water, or 100 cases. Proline Automotive hosted a toy drive to benefit Simon Sanchez Yuletide Gift Giving and Harvest House.
In recognition of Public Power Week, the Guam Power Authority hosted a canned food drive in October for Catholic Social Services, a shoe drive in October from GPA’s divisions for children at the Alee Shelter and Harvest House and will be partnering with Special Olympics Guam to manage its annual Softball Jamboree in November. GPA serves as a sponsor of the SOGU softball event and provides bottled water for the athletes.
The Bureau of Women’s Affairs donated $53,105.65 to the Guam Sexual Assault and Abuse Resource Center Association from a nearly $900,000 grant. The grant is from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Violence Against Women to help persons who are victims/survivors of domestic or dating violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking.
Most of the funding provided $35,488.48 in training costs for seven registered nurses and one island pediatrician to be trained in conducting sexual assault exams, and purchased $12,826 worth of equipment, including a basic colposcope worth $10,055, for Healing Hearts.
The grant also funded audio and visual recording equipment for the Guam Police Department to be able to conduct Forensic Experiential Trauma Interviews, to improve the prosecution rate of victim/survivor cases; two victim advocate positions for the Guam Police Department; personnel for the Office of the Attorney General; and personnel for the Guam Public Defender Service Corp. to provide legal services for DVDVSAS victims.
The bureau used funding from its 2020 Increasing Criminal Justice Responses grant to purchase a colposcope, a rape exam kit, and two laptops for Healing Hearts to help sexual assault examiners more accurately collect evidence. mbj
