Attendees at the Society of American Military Engineers Guam Post Guam Industry Forum were well prepared.
Colorful island style shirts were in abundance among the visitors, who enjoyed what Guam has to offer, including recommendations for where to eat, golfing and more.
About 50% of participants were from off-island, and about 20% of attendees were from the U.S. military population – to include its non-military staff and largely from off-island.
That’s about 250 visitors that came to Guam and spent days here, as the forum at the Dusit Thani Resort ran from July 28 to July 30. Attendance shot up just before the forum to 500, and the daily breaks and evening mixers were appropriately taken advantage of.
The Northern Mariana Islands were also represented, and their presence was appreciated.
The SAME forum also had many businesses displaying their products and services.
Speakers and participants said they would return to the island. We hope so.
The next event in the offing is the Association of Pacific Ports, which will hold its 112th Annual Conference at the Hyatt Regency Guam from Aug. 3 to Aug. 6, hosted by the Port Authority of Guam.
Also in August is the re-scheduled Guam Hotel and Restaurant Association’s Pacific Hotel and Restaurant Expo.
Events such as these not only bring visitors, but present opportunities for businesses to show their community commitment and involvement through sponsorship, support and participation.
Gatherings allow professionals of all types and ages to learn from each other and from the distinguished guests who take the time and trouble, not only to visit but to share their knowledge and opinions.
Side outings and shopping spread the wealth of the experience as well as injecting dollars into the community.
As everybody who has ever been part of a planning committee knows, events are hard work.
Both the SAME event and the welcome on the Port Authority of Guam’s website, offer insight into CHamoru, and our culture.
That sort of focus at SAME — the explanation of the Hafa Adai spirit — clearly delighted attendees, as did the theme that included local cuisine such as beef tinaktak for lunch. mbj
