Like at least some of you, I don’t necessarily enjoy the budget and business planning that comes with a new year. But it is a time when you can say (hopefully), Okay we did good last year, now let’s do better.
So the Glimpses Media team and I put our heads together, and we’ve come up with some exciting plans for 2005. (Watch this space.) Our radio stations — The Wave 105.1 and Power 98 are on a roll.
And we have just launched Route 99 at 99.5 FM — our country music station.
As to the greatest Country Music Hit of All Time, that’s open to debate. Johnny Cash is featured for “I Walk The Line” and “Ring of Fire,” and so is Tammy Wynette’s “Stand by Your Man,” and Patsy Cline’s “Crazy.”
Not to overshare, but one song I can definitely sing along with is “King of the Road,” by Roger Miller. It pops up every now and then in our house.
Here we go: Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents, No phone, no pool, no pets, I ain't got no cigarettes.
(I can’t believe I included “ain’t” in a Plain English column. Definitely a first, and probably a last.)
King of the Road was released in 1965, when apparently you could get a room (if not in a five-star location) for 50 cents — and without a resort charge either.
If you have a country favorite, let me know and I’ll be happy to pass it along.
For your diary: Coming up on Saturday, Feb. 1 is the Guam Business Magazine Executive of the Year Gala at the Hyatt Regency Guam.
In case you missed the news (which hardly seems likely given the wide media coverage), our distinguished nominees this year are Kim Anderson Young, President, Security Title Inc.; Paul A. Calvo, President and CEO, Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters; Tamio “Tom” Clark, Principal broker, Blue Pacific Realty; Ho S. Eun, Founder and Chairman, Core Tech International Group of Companies; Joe C. Guerrero, Co-owner, Naked Fish Bar & Grill and principal consultant for Transcends Consulting; Michael A. Taitano, CEO, XVI Corp. which does business as Guam Service Pros; and Craig Wade, President and Chief Financial Officer, JRV Group, which does business as Mid Pac Far East LLC, Commercial Tire Depot LLC, Napa Auto Parts, and RKM Property Group LLC.
One of these fine executives will be named the Guam Business Magazine 2024 Executive of the Year.
Ticket sales are starting Jan. 6, and you can call our Admin Team on (671) 649-0883 to purchase your tables. And if you told one of us you’d like to attend, we’ll be in touch.
If you have turned the page from the Front Page, you may have noticed a story on events. We do keep an events calendar, so if you want to check if dates are free, or get your own event on the list, just let us know.
We already have a couple of pages of entries for 2025 so if you are a chairperson, and your committee has yet to meet, I’d crack the whip and get them together.
If you flip back, you’ll see we’ve given you a comprehensive list of the events already planned in the islands, and were assured by some of the organizations we reached out to that their dates are just a heartbeat away.
Meanwhile, a very happy new year and also very happy planning. mbj
