Senators will discuss a bill that would provide Guamanians with some relief at gas pumps during emergency session at 2 p.m. Monday, June 19, by the Guam Legislature.
Sen. Joe S. San Agustin introduced Bill 135-37 on June 16. The bill aims to extend the moratorium on liquid fuel tax for another 180 calendar days.
Speaker Therese M. Terlaje stated in a letter to her legislative colleagues that “emergency conditions exist which justify an emergency session.” The letter was sent out the evening of June 18.
Typhoon Mawar did a slow roll over Guam, lingering for hours on the night of March 24 through the early morning hours of March 25. Mawar had sustained winds of about 140 mph with gusts to 160 mph. About four weeks later, thousands of residents and businesses are still waiting for all power and water services, as well as telecommunications, to be restored to pre-typhoon levels.
Last year, in June, Gov. Lourdes A. Leon Guerrero signed a six-month moratorium into law. In her transmittal letter to the Legislature, the governor took note of the rising cost of fuel. She signed the extension of that moratorium in December, making Bill 135, potentially, the third fuel tax relief effort.
