Taiwan relaxes mask mandate
The Central Epidemic Command Center will not require people in Taiwan to wear masks indoors in most situations from Feb. 20, as long as COVID-19 numbers remain stable,
The CECC said masks will remain mandatory indoors in venues such as health care and and senior citizen facilities, and on public transportation, to include aircraft.
People do not need to wear a mask in such locations when eating or taking photos of when wearing a mask is not appropriate or feasible.
Economic census begins in Guam and the NMI
The 2022 Economic Census is beginning in the Mariana Islands, according to advisories from the Guam Department of Labor, the Saipan Chamber of Commerce and officials with the U.S. Census Bureau, who visited Guam and Saipan the week of Feb. 13.
Businesses can expect forms to arrive in the mail in February, with responses due by March 15. However, recipients will also receive a unique code to file responses online. Businesses must respond, according to federal law. Results are expected to be released in June 2024.
According to Journal files, information in economic censuses are used to determine gross domestic product, as well as show the number of businesses in industry sectors, and their total revenue.
The Economic Census — also known as the “business census” — is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau every five years. The Economic Census of Island Areas includes Guam, the Northern Mariana Islands, American Samoa, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
NMI Prevailing Wage Study coming up
The Central Statistics Division, of the Department of Commerce in the Northern Mariana Islands is preparing to conduct the 2023 Prevailing Wage Study to update the current prevailing wages for the NMI that expire on June 30, according to a release.

CODEL visits Guam, includes Guam’s delegate
James C. Moylan, Guam’s delegate to Congress, visited Guam as part of a Congressional Delegation on Feb. 12, according to a release from his office. Led by a fellow Republican, Congressman John Carter (Texas), who is chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, the CODEL was to” visit military installations, inspect [U.S. Department of Defense] equities, and assess defense-related needs associated with enhancing the defensive posture of the Indo Pacific region,” the release said.
According to Moylan’s office, the CODEL is visiting Hawaii and Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands – also the site of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site. The release also did not name other members of the delegation. mbj
