Art lovers or those curious to see what upcoming art exhibitions will offer can take advantage of four events in December.
Those looking for a unique gift depicting Guam or wishing to support local talent will also have choices.
The University of Guam’s Isla Center for the Arts offers the Creative Hands Exhibition, with work by 17 selected artists including Addy’s Custom Crafts, Alyanna M. Barrera, Trexie Berondo, Judy Flores, Keiko Flynn, Alison Hadley, Raiki Leon Guerrero, Chie Numano, Nine, Madison Orland, Lia Park, Yeon Sook Park, Dawn Lees Reyes, Rioanne Simeon, Julius Sotomayor, and Stanley Verroya. Works are in various mediums.
An opening reception will be held on Dec. 5, from 5.30 p.m. to 7.30 p.m. at the Isla Center for the Arts at #15 Dean’s Circle, on the UOG Campus. Refreshments will be served. Admission is free but donations are appreciated, according to the release. The exhibition will be on display from Dec. 5 to Jan.24.
Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ric Castro's latest solo exhibition, Surface Portals & Liquid Koi Dreams, will run from Dec. 6 to Jan. 4 at the CAHA Gallery on the 2nd Floor of the DNA Building in Hagåtña.
The opening reception will be held on Dec. 6, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the CAHA Gallery.
Dorathina Herrero will host a solo exhibit, Phases of the Womb, from Dec. 7 to Jan. 14 at the Senator Antonio M. Palomo Guam Museum & Chamorro Educational Facility in Hagåtña.
A meet the artist event will be held on opening day from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the museum's main floor with Christmas pop-ups included as well.
The Royal Collection will host an exhibition and silent auction to raise funds for the Save the Sihek endeavor on Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Dusit Place.
The event will feature more than 40 pieces of art created by more than 30 artists from Guam and abroad who will share their unique interpretations of the sihek, as well as Guam’s culture, heritage, tradition, and beauty of the island, according to a release.
As a bonus feature, and for display only, will be the work of 20 students from Ordot-Chalan Pago Elementary School produced by young, up-and-coming artists in the 1st to 5th grades.
The Royal Collection will also offer workshops throughout the day hosted by local small businesses and craftsmen including LoveByLibby, Nomadic Needles, and master weaver Thomas Torres. See kingandrail.com/event-list for more details.
Attendees can create their own sihek-inspired necklace, earrings, or bracelet with Libby Quichocho, ($20 registration), learn the basics of crocheting with Katie Parks ($35 registration fee), and weave a paluma (bird) with Thomas Torres (no registration fee). Proceeds will support the Sihek Recovery Project and these small businesses. The event will also have live music performed by DUB., and caricatures by the University of Guam’s Creative Alliance of Tritons. mbj
