Airlines globally are not waiting for a shortage of jet fuel but reacting to the cost in the wake of the closure of the Straits of Hormuz.
As to regional airlines, ANA and Japan Airlines will raise fuel surcharges by up to two times from May, charging 56,000 yen ($356.15) on U.S. and Europe routes.
Korean Air said it would introduce “internal cost-reduction measures" to manage its finances to ensure the firm's "stability amidst rising fuel prices and global economic uncertainty.," according to the BBC, which first reported the news. KAL has also cut flights on lower yield routes.

Philippine Airlines has set slightly lower fuel surcharges of Level 18 from May 1 to May 15 at ₱593 to ₱1,734 for domestic flights and ₱1,958.44 to ₱14,561.87 for international flights in Group 3, which includes Guam, Koror and Saipan. The rate as of May 5 is 61.70 pesos to the dollar.
Asian carriers have seen increased demand on flights to Europe, due to the war in the Middle East.
In a widely quoted statement, the United Airlines CEO said ticket prices could be expected to rise 15% to 20%.
Low-cost carriers – about a third of the global airline market – are strongest in the Asia Pacific with an LCC market share of 39.40% in 2025, according to Fortune Business Insights. Due to their business model LCCs are feeling the pressure first.
