Gary W.F. “Frank” Gumataotao

Gary W.F. “Frank” Gumataotao passed away at the age of 69.
He was a longtime Guam attorney who most recently served as deputy attorney general in the office of the Attorney General of Guam from January 2023.
Gumataotao had previously served as deputy attorney general in the office of the Attorney General of Guam in 2006 and 2007.
Gumataotao’s private practice began in 1988 and continued as the partnership of Gumataotao & Pole, securing a variety of corporate and local government representations. The practice would also broaden its base with the acquisition of the assets of Butler, Telford and Butler.
He would also run in 2014 as a candidate for lieutenant governor with former governor Carl T.C. Gutierrez.
Attorney General Douglas B.K. Moylan, said in a release announcing Gumataotao’s passing, “His private law practice included not only the general practice of law, but provided services especially in bankruptcy and probate cases.”
Gumataotao’s relationships were wide reaching, Moylan said, describing him as “a good man” and “a friend to many.”
Moylan also said, “He is known by his colleagues to be a generous man, always going above and beyond his duties and ready to lend a helping hand.”
Gumataotao’s broader interests included serving as vice president and owner/operator of a Japanese language radio broadcast station from 2000 to 2007 and as vice president of Sky Enterprise doing business as Guam Veterinary Supply.
He also served as chairman of the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve and was a member of ESGR from 1995 to 2006, and as district commodore for the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary.
Gary W.F. “Frank” Gumataotao graduated from Old Dominion University with a bachelor’s of science and in 1988 from the Washington and Lee School of Law with a juris doctorate.
Gumataotao was a licensed member of the Guam Bar Association as well as a licensed member in Washington, D.C.
He is survived by his wife Atsuko Suda Gumataotao and children, Dominique, Janelle, Angelica, Joshua, Hannah and Aya, and their families, and his siblings, Freddie, Besty, Glen, Robert, Kevin, Manuel and Vicente, and their families. mbj
