Good news for hybrid and electric vehicle owners in Guam

The dual port Blink charger just installed at the Dusit Thani Guam Resort’s garage by Triple J Enterprises Inc. will offer owners of electric and hybrid vehicles a better experience than charging at home.

James Rosenberg II, director of Asia Pacific for Blink Charging Co.; told the Journal, “This particular charger is an "AC" charger or "alternating current," better known as a level two charger. It is up to 5x faster than charging on your standard 120v outlet in your home. This means the actual speed of charging is controlled by the onboard AC to DC power conversion inside the car itself.”



Readers can expect a speedy charging experience, whether they are “topping up,” or staying overnight at the Dusit.

“The car will take in as much power as it can handle and process, as quickly as it can keeping in mind limiting factors like heat, as well as the SoC (state of charge, better known as the % full of the battery). Batteries in a low state of charge — say around 3% — will charge much faster than a battery that is nearly full, exactly like your mobile phone or laptop operates,” he said.

The ultimate in speed for charging — a DC fast charger — charges directly to a car battery.  Rosenberg said, “DC Fast Chargers are not currently at Dusit, but we are looking to bring them to Guam in the near future.”

He said the cost of deploying a single DC charger is many times more than an AC and due to the demands for power, a lot more has to be done to prepare on the construction and infrastructure side.

However, Rosenberg told the paper it’s simply a matter of time.

“Just as we see in the rest of the world, DC will have its place and they are absolutely coming to the Marianas. But we want to make sure ours are done right so we can avoid the reliability issues we are seeing in the mainland, while at the same time offering newer technologies most markets have not seen yet …,” he said. Blink intends to “…  work hand in hand with the [Guam Power Authority] to make sure we are not only avoiding issues for the grid, but in some cases able to actually help it stabilize.”

Triple J already has Blink chargers at the Triple J headquarters on Marine Corps Drive, at the Agana Shopping Center, and Pacific Place.

As of January, Blink Charging Co. had “contracted, sold, or deployed nearly 85,000 charging ports worldwide,” according to its website. Among other agreements, Blink has an exclusive agreement with Mitsubishi for its nationwide dealer network and a contract with the U.S. Postal Service to provide 41,500 EV charging stations and network services. mbj
