Guam can expect grocery stores and supermarkets to open additional outlets in the coming months. These facilities offer shoppers thousands of individual stock units, with some chains on the island hosting an in-store presence of other businesses.
Cost-U-Less is set to open a new store in Hagatna.
This store will occupy 50,000 square feet and will be the largest Cost-U-Less location on the island, taking the number of stores to four.
Cost-U-Less has partnered on the project with the Agana Shopping Center.
“We are delighted in welcoming Cost-U-Less as a new anchor tenant in the Agana Shopping Center, as we build a best-in-class shopping experience for the island,” Therese Kamm, general manager for Agana Shopping Center, told the Journal.
Cost-U-Less has entered into a long-term lease agreement for the new retail space.
American Grocery is also set to open a new location in Maite after opening a second Yigo location almost three years ago in June 2021. The Maite store has been taking shape over the last couple of years. Construction was originally tagged at $3.8 million, according to Journal files. The exterior is mostly finished, with Ediya Coffee’s second location featured at the front of the grocery store.
No opening date has been set yet, according to Bryan Noket, general manager for American Grocery.
Happy Mart is set to open its second location, which it said is three times the size of its current location in Barrigada. The new location will be next to Perez Bros Inc. in Harmon.
Don Don Donki held its grand opening on April 25, with many Guam residents making their way to see what the 160,000 square foot Japanese discount store had to offer. According to Journal files, residents can expect tenants to include Three Squares Restaurant, Sakurai Guam Inc., Myungrang Hotdogs, Auntie Anne’s, Maui Tacos, Infusion Coffee Shop, Olive Garden, Boong’s Café, Wanpo Yasuda Restaurant, Wanpo Tea Shop and more.
The grocery and supermarket industry is a large one. According to IBIS world, a company focusing on research on thousands of industries worldwide, “The market size, measured by revenue, of the Supermarkets & Grocery Stores industry in the U.S. was $841.6 billion in 2023.”
As of a June 2023 survey in the United States, “Approximately 33% of respondents indicated an average spending range of $101 to $200 U.S. during their grocery shopping,” according to ConnectPOS. mbj
