The Pacific island nation of Palau has asked the United States to increase patrol of its waters following several incursions of Chinese ships.
President Surangel S. Whipps, Jr. said he would welcome a bigger presence of U.S. military in the country.
"No matter what, we're going to be in the center of whatever's happening, so it's important that we're protected," Whipps said during a visit to Japan on June 14. “To get peace, you have to project strength.”
Palau identified a Chinese research vessel, Haiyang Dizhi Liuhao, in its waters on May 24. The ship entered Palau’s economic zone without providing any notification. This is the third such event in the last couple of years, the President said. mbj
