Ueda Susumu has assumed the role of Consul General of Japan on Guam and has been making his rounds with local leadership and getting to know the island.
Ueda was appointed on Nov. 15, taking over for former Consul General, Rumiko Ishigami, whose tenure expired in October.
According to a statement made by Ueda, he said, “it is an honor to take on this role and contribute to fostering further the close and friendly relationship between Japan and Guam.”
Ueda was born in the Hiroshima Prefecture of Japan in July of 1964, and has over 30 years of experience in foreign affairs.
Several notable positions Ueda held were as first secretary of Japan in Bulgaria and Greece, principal deputy director of the Internet Public Relations Division, Public Diplomacy Division, and the Exchange Programs Division, Cultural Affairs and Overseas Public Relations Division within the Minister’s Secretariat, and, more recently, director of the Health and Welfare Division within the Minister’s Secretariat.
Ueda highlighted that Guam is a well-known travel destination for Japan and that one of his key responsibilities is to promote the interest of Guam among Japanese travelers and nationals residing on the island.
Moreover, he recognizes the strategic importance the island has for the Indo-Pacific region and said that he looks forward to deepening the ties between Japan and Guam and to “remain attuned to the sentiments of the people of Guam.” mbj
