Palau opened its first embassy in Australia on Oct. 12, with President Surangel S. Whipps Jr. and a delegation that included lawmakers traveling to Canberra for the diplomatic milestone.
The visit also gave Whipps an opportunity to promote Palau as a tourism destination ahead of a seasonal expansion of Qantas’ Brisbane-Koror service. The airline will add a second weekly round-trip flight in December, giving Australian travelers the option of a four-day getaway. Australia is one of Palau’s fastest-growing visitor markets. Australian arrivals increased 55.1%, from 1,998 during the first nine months of 2025 to 3,099 during the same period in 2026, according to the Palau Visitors Authority. Total arrivals rose 25.6%, from 50,899 to 63,948.

Despite that growth, arrivals remained 9.4% below the comparable 2019 total. Palau welcomed 70,611 visitors from January through September that year, leaving a gap of 6,663 visitors against the pre-pandemic benchmark. This year’s arrivals have reached approximately 91% of that level.
The recovery remains uneven. Arrivals increased over 2025 in eight of the first nine months of 2026, with June the exception. January was the only month to exceed its corresponding 2019 total, while June and July came within 3% and 1.7%, respectively, of their pre-pandemic levels.

Australian travelers accounted for about 5% of Palau’s arrivals through September, making Australia a relatively small but rapidly growing source market.
Qantas’ second weekly Brisbane-Koror service is scheduled to operate from December through the end of March 2027. Flights will depart Brisbane on Wednesdays and Saturdays, with return departures from Koror on Thursdays and Sundays. The additional frequency will give travelers more flexibility than the current once-weekly schedule.

The seasonal expansion builds on the Qantas service that began in December 2024 and adds capacity as Palau works to broaden its visitor base. PVA’s September report listed Qantas as operating once weekly from Brisbane.
The additional service could also expand travel options between Guam and Australia. It has been more than a decade since then Continental Micronesia ended its nonstop Guam-Cairns route. United Airline’s schedule effective Oct. 25 includes a Wednesday night departure from Guam that arrives in Palau early Thursday, coinciding with one of Qantas’ planned Brisbane departure days. The connection’s practicality will depend on flight times and ticketing arrangements. This would help boost Whipps' goal of making Palau a gateway for travelers by connecting the north and south Pacific.
While Australia offers growth opportunities, Asian markets continue to supply most of Palau’s visitors. China remained the largest source market through September, with 22,671 arrivals, representing approximately 35% of the total and an increase of 35% over the same period in 2025. Taiwan ranked second with 10,746 visitors, up 4%.
Japan recorded the strongest percentage growth among the major markets, increasing 86% to 9,222 visitors. The United States and Canada together supplied 8,629 visitors, up 2%, while Europe contributed 4,159, an increase of 16%. All major source-market categories recorded year-to-date growth.
September, the latest month available, brought 5,343 visitors, up 18.8% from September 2025 but still 20.6% below September 2019. Arrivals declined 29% from August, making September the lowest-arrival month of 2026 so far. PVA noted that arrivals also fell between August and September in 2025.
Japan accounted for most of September’s year-over-year increase, contributing 528 of the month’s 844 additional visitors. Australian arrivals fell to 268 from 309 a year earlier, despite the market’s strong performance over the first nine months. mbj
